Social Media is a Digital ‘Village’

The Digital Village

If we do meet again, why, we shall smile;
If not, why then this parting was well made.

                             ~ William Shakespeare

Social media has brought back village life – in a digital way and without borders.

In a village of old, neighbors knew everyone and kept tabs on each other. In this ‘digital village’ called social media it’s kind of the same. People blog, tweet, and post on Facebook or Google+ about their lives and thoughts and are followed by and have conversations with relatives, friends, colleagues, and other interested people all over the planet.

Just as each village had it’s town criers, gossips, and idiots…so does social media.

It’s really pretty cool to think about.

What is a domain name and how does it relate to a web hosting service?

domain website

The easiest way to picture it is to think of web hosting as your home and the domain name is the address. All websites must have both a domain name and a web hosting account in order to be visible on the web. A domain name as an easy-to-read name tag which people use to visit and view a specific website.

Websites are usually accessed by either typing in a uniform resource locator (URL) which contains the domain name of a website or by typing in an internet protocol (IP) address associated with a web hosting account . For example, a website’s domain name is in alphabetical form (www.mywebsite.com) while an IP address is in numerical form (12.34.567.89).

Domain names can be purchased anywhere and for a variety of prices, however a domain name registrar is not always the best web hosting provider.

Self-Hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) vs. WordPress.com

Which is Better?

Is it better to pick the self-hosted WordPress.org or is it better to go with the free version of WordPress.com?
Here’s a side-by-side comparison with a list of pros and cons for both platforms.

WordPress.org vs WordPress.com

Which One is for You?

Is one easier to use than the other? No, the interfaces of both are very similar. I always recommend using a self-hosted installation of WordPress to give you full control of your site.

Before you make a choice, you need to decide what you want to do with your website.

  • If you are a personal blogger and you don’t care about making money from your website, then sign on with WordPress.com.
  • If you are a trying to make your blogging into a career, creating an online business, or developing a membership site then use a self-hosted installation of WordPress (aka WordPress.org).
